45 Years On, Local Drowning Dramatized into Horror Debut: 9:13 THE RETURNING

9/20/2017

Parit Buntar is a small town lying along the Malacca Straits, one of the last stops before Penang Island. It's beautiful, colonial exterior holds a terrible
tragedy. In 1972, a terrible accident resulted in the sinking of a commuter ferry and 27 people were drowned. The majority of those who died were school children. Today marks the 45 year anniversary of their deaths, and 9.13 THE RETURNING will be doing a special premiere in Kuala Lumpur on September 18. The release date for Malaysia is set for September 21.

9.13 THE RETURNING is the debut feature of Parit Buntar native David Thian, who grew up with the rumours and tales surrounding the tragedy. In 9.13 THE RETURNING, Thian brings out stories he grew up with, dramatizing the aftermath of one woman's guilt. A terrible accident becomes an intergenerational burden spanning decades.
